About City Union Mission

Since 1924, City Union Mission has been meeting the spiritual, physical and emotional needs of people who are struggling with homelessness, addiction or income below the poverty line.

Each year the Mission provides over 150,000 nights of safe shelter and 241,000 nutritious meals, along with clothing and medical care. After meeting these vital physical needs, the lives of families and individuals are transformed through the Mission’s long-term life-recovery programs, which include addiction recovery and relapse prevention; Christian guidance and counseling; life-skills, parenting and budgeting courses; work therapy and career development.

Special programs for children—like summer camp, after-school recreation and tutoring—allow boys and girls to develop academic and social skills, self-esteem and confidence that empower them to break the cycle of poverty that may have afflicted their families for generations.

The New Face of Homelessness

There was a time in my life when I was homeless in Kansas City, when I was living on the streets in Kansas City.

In Kansas City and the surrounding counties, a recent survey reported that 44.7% of the homeless did in fact consist of families. So how has it changed? It's changed in the people that were in that middle class area. People that felt like they were one paycheck away from being in a spot are now in that spot.

It's not just individuals. It's not just the mentally ill. This is made of families, and that includes children, and that's just not okay.

A Kansas City Problem

How is that possible that we have hungry people in the United States? With so much produce and so much being produced, and you have homelessness, and you have the hunger part of it. It's just unbelievable. I still can't fathom that.

I mean, with places like City Union Mission...where families can actually stay, and they take care of the abused. There's just so much that this Mission does, and I think that it’s so valuable to our city that we really need to make sure that everybody in this city gets on board to try to feed KC now and make sure that we don't have this problem in Kansas City.

You CAN Make a Difference

One person does make a difference. For just 2 bucks, you can feed a person through City Union Mission, I mean what is that? That's something that all of us can do — that's less than the cost of a cup of coffee at Starbucks, for crying out loud. And it's something that every person can do and can make a difference.

That one meal could put somebody on a totally different course in life. That person could be volunteering at City Union Mission 3 years from now.
